How Often Should I Weigh Myself?

At Prescribe FIT, we believe that small habits can have transformational effects on your health and wellness. This includes weighing yourself every day to help you lose weight.

Why should I weigh myself every day?

Science supports this claim as well. One study of over 1,000 adults found that people who only weighed themselves once per week did not lose weight, whereas those that weighed in 6-7 times per week lost an average of 1.7% of their body weight.

Weighing yourself each day is also shown to promote better weight control behaviors. These include more moderated calorie intake and increased physical activity.

While we encourage patients in our program to weigh themselves every day, it is only required to weigh in 5 days per week or 20 days per month. Keep in mind that patients must record at least 20 weigh-ins per month as an insurance requirement for our program.

Prescribe FIT has many resources in our mobile app to help remind you to step on the scale each day and build a weigh-in routine that works for you.

Conclusion

Overall, weighing yourself daily can help you stay mindful of your progress. It can also keep you motivated on your weight loss journey, ultimately helping you lose more weight. It’s also important to weigh in at least 5 times per week to meet the insurance requirements of our program.

Keep in mind, however, that weight is just one measure of your overall health. By focusing on a variety of different healthy lifestyle factors, the numbers on the scale will follow.

If at any time you are struggling to weigh yourself daily, or it is causing you undue stress, be sure to talk to your care coordinator for support.
