Early Outcomes of Orthopedic Pre-surgical Patients Enrolled in an Intensive, Interprofessional Lifestyle Medicine Program to Optimize Health

This study highlights the effectiveness of an intensive Lifestyle Medicine (LSM) program in optimizing health for orthopedic pre-surgical patients. Among 54 participants (mean age 61), 91% successfully achieved their surgical goals, and 96% met their pre-program health objectives. Most patients had a high BMI (mean 43.2 kg/m²) and multiple chronic conditions, with notable challenges like impaired sleep and no physical activity. Over an average of 13 weeks, patients reported significant improvements in weight (average loss of 11 lbs) and BMI, alongside reductions in pain and enhanced physical and mental health. These findings demonstrate how LSM programs can address whole-person health, enabling orthopedic patients to improve lifestyle behaviors and prepare effectively for surgery.
