STEPtember: Musculoskeletal Benefits of Walking

September is the perfect time to get moving, feel better, and have fun with Prescribe FIT’s STEPtember Challenge! This month, we’re inviting you to join us as we celebrate the simple, powerful act of walking. Walking isn’t about competition—it’s about celebrating movement together. Whether you’re tracking your steps, distance, or time, every step is a win!

How It Works

There are three easy ways to participate in STEPtember:
  • Track your steps using your smartwatch or fitness tracker.
  • Track your distance—each mile adds up toward our collective goal.
  • Track your time—just one hour a day makes a big difference.

Your daily target: 8,000 steps, 4 miles, or 1 hour of walking. Together, we’ll walk across the country—one step at a time!

Benefits of Walking

Walking is more than just moving your feet. From a musculoskeletal and overall wellness perspective, the benefits are powerful:

  • 🦴 Strengthens bones: Maintains bone density and lowers osteoporosis risk.
  • 💪 Supports joints: Improves lubrication, reduces stiffness, and eases arthritis pain.
  • 🏋️ Builds muscle: Strengthens legs, hips, and core for stability and endurance.
  • 🦵 Protects the spine: Promotes posture, alignment, and reduces low back pain.
  • ⚖️ Aids rehab & prevention: Safe, low-impact activity to recover from injury or surgery.
  • 🧍 Improves balance & mobility: Enhances proprioception, coordination, and fall prevention.

Join the Movement

It’s easy to get started:

  • Track your steps in the Prescribe FIT PACE Mobile App by connecting your smartwatch. Learn how here.
  • Prefer a different platform? Use WorldWalking.org and join the Prescribe FIT group!

Every step you take makes a difference—for your health, for your wellbeing, and for our community. This September, let’s make movement something to celebrate.
